Things I've learned and improved upon:
- Game Design
- Producing
- Communicating
and most importantly, just having a lot of fun!
DuckOff was one of the fist projects we did in the study. We were tasked with making an arcade game in 2 weeks while having randomized teammates.
We originally wanted to make a smash bros type of game, but this turned out to be a bit too ambitious for the time we had. After that realization we opted for something simple but fun. So made a mixture of Snake and Tron with Ducks!
It’s design is very straightforward. You need to defeat the opposing player to win, you do this by blocking their path. You can block their path in 2 ways; 1. Surround them with you ducklings that follow you; 2. Place your ducklings on the map, if you do this your tail shrinks. Beware that you don’t run into your own duckling yourself!
The assignment was to make a custom controller board, we did that and made the game multiplayer. This worked so well that the Teachers wanted to put it on the Saxion Open Days, where it could still be player 2 years after we finished it! We didn’t realize it at the time, but we made a damn fun arcade game in 2 weeks.
These mechanics allowed for an ever changing map and strategy, although I am not going to act like this is a masterpiece. We had a lot of fun making it and I still speak to most of the teammates I had back then. This project is not a testament of great game design to me, its to example of why fun in your team is so important. I will always remember this silly little duck game.
Thank you!
